My Experience!
The Idea:
To begin, I worked with Mariana Van-Brackel to create this project. We decided on the idea of making the background noises of an Italian restaurant in class and decided to work on the sounds at her house. In total, the entire project took about 2-3 hours to complete and was done entirely on Cap-cut. Mariana and I decided on using Cap-cut as our editing platform because of the different sound effects and transitions it provided so that the project could sound seamless.
The Process:
I had arrived at Mariana's house at around 3:30 and we immediately brainstormed the different sounds we could make ourselves to make the noises sound real. I had already started working on the script so that we would have somewhat of an idea on what to do on our project and a general outline of what we would do. I knew that I wanted the stereotypical jazz music that is played in Italian restaurants so we scrolled through Spotify until we found a sound that fit what we wanted for our project. Along with the jazz music in the background, we also knew that we needed the chatter that is formed in a restaurant atmosphere. Mariana blended both of the sounds together and created a perfect mix of the music and the chatter.
Furthermore, We knew we wanted an interaction with a waiter/waitress and a customer however, the 7 word limit was quite tricky so we had to work through it. We relied more on the tone of the person speaking rather than using a lot of words in our projects. We mainly created ambient noise to make the listener feel more immersed into the story. For the most part, we created most of the sounds and only really relied on external sources for the sounds for longer parts of the story such as the chatter, music, kitchen chatter and for objects we didn't own such as a bell, a cork popping, and a telephone ring. All of these sounds that we used externally were all found on Youtube and Spotify.
Final thoughts:
In all, this project was quite easy for my partner and I to achieve. We both did not have much prior editing knowledge but the Cap-cut app had helped immensely especially for beginner editors. At the end of this project I learned that there are many steps to creating such a small portion of a film and that it's so imperative to pay attention to the tiny details as they could add so much to a story.
