Movie Analysis: 10 Things I Hate About You

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU

Close-up Shot

This close-up shot was used towards the end of the movie after Kat presents her sonnet. The close up shot shows the emotion that has overcome her after reading the poem named "10 things I hate about you" based on Patrick. After finding out that her relationship between Patrick and herself was based on a bet he made with Joey. The close-up makes the audience feel empathetic towards Kat, as she is usually a closed off and cold person. Crying, especially in class over boy is extremely out of character for her and it adds emphasis to the fact that Patrick had hurt her.

Over The Shoulder Shot

This shot was used to show the contrasting conversation between Joey and Patrick as Joey introduces the bet he has made for him. We learn that Joey does this so that he could pursue Kat's sister, Bianca. The angle used in this scene makes the audience feel as if they are immersed in the scene with the characters. The audience could see that Joey is clearly a jerk and does not care about the feelings of others. Patrick, however is more of an airhead and really only cares about the money that he would receive from this bet.

Wide Shot

Prior to this scene, we as the audience learn that Cameron is interested in Bianca and is willing to pursue her. In this shot, we can see that Cameron and Bianca are isolated with only each other. This wide shot adds emphasis to the fact that it is in fact just them together. This could make the audience wonder if Cameron is going to pull a move on her or maybe ask her out. It makes the audience feel as if they're rooting for Cameron as he is clearly the better choice between Joey and him.

Two Person Shot

This scene was filmed after the party where Kat finally lets loose and lets people see the real her after getting drunk. In this shot, we can see that it's just Kat and Patrick and in this scene we can see him falling for her as he takes care of her. This shot lets the audience grow more fond of their relationship together. The angle also allows for an intimate and raw conversation between two characters and helps build on the plot towards their connection.

Aerial Shot

This shot is the first scene in the entire movie. It sets the scene in Seattle. This shot over the sea creates a fresh atmosphere and stars the movie off on a nice and clean note. Although there are no characters in this scene, this opening shot allows the audience to prepare for the story to begin. This scene helps open the movie and show the setting that the characters are in. We can see that there is a beach overlooking the town and that this could or could not play a part in the movie and what could happen.Furthermore, the audience could feel as if they are in the movie as well if they are able to take in the views that the characters do in their everyday life.
